Rotaract's Origin

Rotaract is a Rotary International project that began in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, in March 1968. (Rotary is an international service club like Lyons and Kinsmen, but bigger, and of course, better!)

The Rotaract Club of Winnipeg is a youth project sponsored by the Rotary Club of Winnipeg-Charleswood. Interest in starting this club began to mount in August of 1986, and the club was finally chartered in January 1987.

Several other Rotaract clubs were present at the time in District 5550 (covering Manitoba, Saskatchewan and north western Ontario), but today we are one of only two clubs in this district (the second being Saskatoon). However, Rotaract members with the help of some very key Rotary members are strengthening both existing clubs and gaining ground on starting whole new clubs in other communities and districts.

What is Rotaract

Rotaract's name comes from the combination of the words Rotary and Action. Rotaract clubs are composed of enthusiastic and ambitious 18 to 30 something year olds seeking to develop public speaking, professional and leadership skills, as well as responsible citizenship and community understanding both locally and internationally. Today there are more than 7,500 Rotary-sponsored Rotaract Clubs in some 156 countries around the world, with over 173,000 members.

Rotaract is the future of Rotary. Above all, Rotaract is fun, friends, sharing, supporting, helping, learning, involvement, commitment, new experiences, fairness, personal growth, awareness of world, community and self, results, pride, self-worth and self-confidence.

What do we do?

The Winnipeg Rotaract club organizes a variety of projects and activities, according to our club's interest. We do, however, follow three main areas of focus: professional development, leadership development, and service projects (both locally and internationally).

Together, these areas ensure that we have a balanced service program while providing opportunities for personal development. It is important to remember that Rotaract, like Rotary, is diverse, and each club acquires unique qualities, depending where in the world it is established.
